Pet insurance

(#107)

Asalamualaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakatuhu dear Shaykh,

I pray this email finds you well Inshallah

Me and my wife own two cats Alhamdullilah. We had a quick question about Pet Insurance. My understanding is most if not all insurance schemes are haram (forbidden) due to the uncertainty carried within them

I assume the same for Pet Insurance as well (which is a form of medical insurance for pets) as it depends on the uncertainty of “when” something happen etc

Kindly request your answer regarding this 🙂 Jazakallahu Khairan. may Allah Azzawajal accept of you and increase you. Ameen

But my understanding is this is similar to a medical insurance for humans (but in this case its for animals)

Wasalam

Kind regards

We acknowledge the receipt of your query. Please excuse us for the belated reply.

According to our understanding, the above form of insurance is prohibited under Islâmic Law. The reason is that there are two ingredients involved in insurance schemes that are not acceptable in Islâm, one of them being interest (usury) and the other, gambling.

Together with the above Haraam elements a third element is also found which is the element of Gharar [uncertainty]. In such a scheme there is no guarantee when the money or service will be received as it will only materialize once an accident occurs and there is no guarantee that the policy holders pet will ever encounter an accident or an illness needing medical attention.A transaction which is based on gharar [uncertainty] is not permissible in Islam. See Mabsoot vol. 13 pg. 194

Therefore, we should place our trust in Allah that only He will protect and also give blessings in our earnings. By utilising our surplus wealth in channels of Zakaat and Lillah (obligatory and optional charity) than Inshallah we will receive the help and protection of Allah Ta’ala.

We make mention here of a few supplications of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alai wa sallam) which he used to recite and also encouraged the Ummah to read:

Abu Darda (Radiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alai wa sallam) said: Whoever recites the following dua seven times in the morning and evening Allah Ta’ala will take care of his worries and anxieties in this world and the hereafter

حسبي الله لا إله إلا هو عليه توكلت وهو رب العرش العظيم

(الأذكار للنووي ص٨٧)

Uthman bin Affan (Radiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alai wa sallam) said: Any servant who recites the following dua thrice and the morning an evening nothing will harm him:

بسم الله الذي لا يضر مع اسمه شيء في الأرض ولا في السماء وهو السميع العليم

(الأذكار للنووي ص٨٢)

These are only a few dua’s Rasulullah (Sallallahu alai wa salam) taught the Ummah as a means to protect themselves. May Allah (Ta’ala) strengthen our Imaan and may he give us the ability to tread the path of Rasulullah (sallallahu alai wa salam) Ameen.
