We received your query regarding Eid Salaah. Our response is as follows:

Eid Salaah is Waajib (compulsory) upon all adult males. Under the restrictions of level 2 lockdown the performance of Eid Salaah can be performed in groups of 10 people1. There is no substitute or Qadha for Eid Salaah. The minimum amount of people required for Eid Salaah and Khutbah is four mature males including the Imām. An Imām who has already lead an Eid congregation cannot lead another Eid congregation.

Method of performing Eid Salaah

The Eid Salaah consists of two Rak’aats of congregational Salaah without any Adhān or Iqāmah. The Salaah is performed in the same manner as an ordinary Salaah but with the addition of six extra Takbeers and raising the hands with every extra Takbeer. The time for Eid salaah is from Ishrāq (15-20 mins after sunrise) until mid-day. The Eid Salaah is performed first followed by the Eid Khutbah.

Procedure for Eid Salaah

1st Rak’aat: The Imām will say the first Takbeer (Allāhu Akbar) while lifting the hands and folding them. The followers will also say Allāhu Akbar, raise their hands, then fold them and read Thanā.

The Imām and the followers will thereafter say three extra Takbeers, raising their hands with every Takbeer and leaving them to the sides without folding them after the two Takbeers. There is nothing to be recited between the extra Takbeers. After the third extra Takbeer, the Imaam and the followers will fold their hands as normal. The Imām will then recite Surah al-Fātihah and any other Surah, preferably Surah A’lā and complete the Rak’aat as done in an ordinary Salaah.

2nd Rakaat: The Imām and the followers will stand up for the second Rak’aat and will recite Surah al-Fātihah followed by any other Surah, preferably, Surah Ghāshiyah. Before going into Rukū’, the Imām will recite three extra Takbeers by raising the hands and leaving them to the sides without folding them and the followers will do the same. The Imām will then say the 4th Takbeer without raising the hands and go into Ruku’. The Salaah will then be completed as normal.

Eid Khutbah (Sermon)

After the Eid Salaah is performed, the Imām will stand facing the congregants and read the first Khutbah in arabic. After the first Khutbah, the Imaam will sit for a short duration on the Mimbar (pulpit) or chair. He will then stand again read the second Khutbah in Arabic. At the end of the second Khutbah, the performance of the Eid prayer is concluded.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
