We received your query regarding I’tikaaf. Our response is as follows:
If a person leaves the Masjid boundary during Sunnah I’tikaaf for no valid Shar’ee reason than the I’tikaaf will be void. It will be Wajib to make Qada of only that day in which the I’tikaaf was rendered void. It is not Wajib to make Qada of the full ten days.
The procedure of making Qada of this one day is as follows: If there is time remaining in that Ramadaan, one must perform I’tikaaf with the Niyyah (intention) of Qada in that Ramadaan, commencing from the setting of the sun of one day until the setting of the sun of the following day. If there is no time in that particular Ramadaan or if it is not possible for any reason to perform I’tikaaf therein, then apart from Ramadaan, one can keep a fast on any day and perform I’tikaaf for one day. On the other hand, if one makes Qada the following Ramadaan, this also will be valid. However, there is no guarantee of life and therefore one should make Qada as quickly as possible.
For more detail on the laws of I’tikaaf, refer to the book “I’tikaaf, virtues and laws” by Hadratul Ustadh Maulana Moosa Kajee hafidhahullah. Published by Madrasah Arabia Islamia Azaadville, South Africa.
