We received your e-mail dated 21/10/2012 regarding the cutting of the hair and nails on the first ten days of Zul Hijjah. Our response is as follows:

عن امّ سلمة رضى الله عنها قالت قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم اذا دخل العشر و اراد بعضكم ان يضحّى فلا يمس من شعره و بشره شيئا

(مسلم)

Hadhrat Umme Salma Radhiyallahu anha quotes Nabi Sallallahu alai wa salam saying,

“When the month of Zul-Hijjah begins and you have made the intention to slaughter, then do not cut your hair nor trim your nails.

(Saheeh Muslim)

From the above narration, the Fuqaha (Islamic jurists) have explained that it is Mustahab (preferable) that after sighting the moon of Zul-Hijjah, any person intending to slaughter should not remove any hair from his body, be it the hair of the head, under arms or below the navel, nor should one cut short one’s nails (it should also be remembered that it is not permissible in any case for women to cut the hair on their heads except in certain cases such as coming out of Ihraam). After sacrificing the animal, he should attend to these matters. However, it should be remembered that this is Mustahab and not a condition for the acceptance of one’s sacrifice, nor will there be any sin if one does not do so. However practising on the above is more rewarding.

This practice is performed in order for us to resemble the Hujjaaj who are also prevented to cut their nails and hair while in the state of Ihraam.

Another point to remember is that it is not permitted in Shariah (the laws of the Qur’an and the Ahadeeth) to leave ones hair and nails to grow for more than forty days without cutting them. For this reason, if one exceeds the forty day period then it will be incumbent and necessary for him to cut his/her hair and nails even though it may be the first ten days of Zul-Hijjah.

May Allâh Ta’aala grant us all the ability to do good.  Ameen
