What is the authenticity of the following narrations:-
1. Umar Ibnul Khattab (radhiallahu anhu) says, “If only there could be a stone in the mouth of the one who recites behind the Imaam.”
2. Alqamah relates that Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood (radhiallahu anhu) said, “If only the mouth of the person reading behind the Imaam would be filled with soil (rubble).

We received your query regarding the recitation of Surah Faatihah behind the Imaam. Our response is as follows;
According to the Hanafi Mazhab, it is not permissible for the Muqtadi to recite Surah Fatihah or any Surah behind the Imaam. When the Muqtadi is in Qiyaam (standing position in Salaat), he should not read anything except the Thanaa (Subhaanakallahumma wa bi hamdika...). The recitation by the Imaam will suffice for the Muqtadi, as told to us by Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam. It has been reported in Ibne-Majah that Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam said: “The person who has an Imaam, the Qiraat (recitation) of the Imaam is in fact Qiraat for him (i.e. on the Muqtadi’s behalf).” Thus, the Muqtadi should NOT recite any Qur’an behind the Imaam; instead he should remain silent.
The narration of Hadrat Umar Radiyallaahu anhu is mentioned in the Musannaf of Abdur Razaaq:
عبد الرزاق عن داود بن قيس عن محمد بن عجلان قال قال على”من قرأ مع الامام فليس مع الفطرة” قال و قال
ابن مسعود:ملىء فوه ترابا و قال عمربن الخطاب:وددت ان الذى يقرأ خلف الامام فى فيه حجر
(مصنف عبد الرزاق٢٨٠٦ -ج2-ص138)
The narration of Abdullah bin Masood Radiyallaahu anhu is in the Musannaf of Abdur Razzaaq Rahimahullah. Abu Bakr Abdur Razzaaq ibn Hammaam ibn Naafi al Himyari As-San’aani passed away in the year Shawwaal 211 AH (Tadhkiratul huffaaz 1:334 and Siyar a;laamun nubala 9:580 from Bustaanul Muhadetheen).
حدثنا ابو بكرة قال ثنا ابو داود قال ثنا حديج بن معاوية عن ابى اسحاق عن علقمة عن ابن مسعود رضى الله عنه قال ليت
الذى يقرأ خلف الامام ملى فوه ترابا

Mufti Rasheed Ludhyaanwi Rahimahullaah has mentioned that the above Sanad (chain of narrators) of Imaam Tahaawi Rahimahullaah is Saheeh (authentic). (Ahsanul Fataawa- VL 3. Pg 176)
على قال من قرأ خلف الامام فقد اخطأ الفطرة ومحمد الاصبهاني قال الذهبي صدوق وقال أبو حاتم لا يحتج به وقال في الكاشف اخرج له الترمذي والنسائي وابن ماجة وقواه ابن حبان وباقى السند على شرط الصحيح وقد جاء لمحمد بن الاصبهاني في ذلك متابعة فروى الدارقطني في سننه من طريق عبد العزيز بن محمد ثنا قيس عن عبد الرحمن بن الاصبهاني فذكره بسنده وهذا الاثر وان اضطرب سنده لكنه من هذا الوجه لا بأس به
Regarding the report of Abdullaah bin Mas’ud Radiyallaahu anhu Allama Nimawi in Athar al-Sunan says that its sanad is Hasan (sound). (Pg 96)
The Athar of ‘Umar Radiyallaahu anhu is also correct, refer to al-Ta’leeq al-Mumajjad on Muwatta Imam Muhammad Rahimahullah p. 102 edition- Qadeemi.
