Zakaat calculation

(#102)

AssalamuAlaikum W R W B

Mufti Saheb – if you could clarify following:

Every year we calculate our Zakat in Shabaan.

Our family property overseas will Inshallah be sold in July (July) or around that date – do we have to calculate Zakat for that in this year or that will be counted as next period?

Remember us in your duas.

We have received your query with regards to your Zakaah.  Our response is as follows.

We are unaware of which date your Zakaat will be due. If your Zakaat is due on e.g. 20th of Ramadhaan then you will give Zakaat on the entire amount which is in your possession on the 20th of Ramadhaan. If any wealth comes into your possession after the Zakaat date then you will not be obliged to include it in the calculation of the Zakaat. However, if a person does decide to give Zakaat for it in advance it will be permissible. {See: Ad-Durrul Mukhtaar vol. 2 pg. 293, Fataawa Alamghiri vol. 1 pg. 176 Kitaab-uz-Zakaat- Aap ke Masaail aur Unka Hal vol. 5 pg. 103, Maktabah Ludhyanwi}

It should be noted that Zakaat is calculated according to the Lunar months not the Gregorian calendar. {See:  Fataawa Alamghiri vol. 1 pg. 175 – Kitaab-uz-Zakaat – Aap Ke Masaail Aur Unka Hal vol. 5 pg. 103, Maktabah Ludhyanwi}
