Talking with ones prospective spouse

Question

(#052)

Assalamu alaikum. My relative asking the above question to proceed with her daughters wedding:

Is it permissible in Islam for a prospective groom to talk to a prospective bride, just once, with the intention of knowing the compatibility between them. It won’t be a video call. Or is it permissible for them to talk with their parents in the call?

We have received your query dated 20/10/21, our response is as follows:

Speaking and communicating with ‘someone’ albeit an envisaged spouse or marriage partner being a total stranger unto one over the telephone is strictly not permitted and prohibited in Shariah. If one wishes to find anything out about the prospective bride, the correct procedure is to inquire about her ways and habits through one’s reliable Mahram woman of the family in whom one may concur. [1]

The above is regardless of whether the parents will be on the call or not.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
