Question
1) Due to lack of housing and high cost of living …. Today in NZ, it is very hard for single Muslims to find a place with only Muslims from a single gender to live with (i.e rentals & flating) 2) Also, it very common to see Muslim families renting and sharing a room in thier own house with a Non-Muslim or an أجنبي or a غير محرم to compensate the cost of living. 3) Is free mixing between genders (اختلاط) alowed in this case ? 4) Finally, what can we do help to the Muslim community in this regards? Salam Alykum …

We have received your query regarding sharing rooms with the opposite gender and other related issues, our response is as follows:
It will not be permissible to share a room with a person of the opposite gender.[1] If a Muslim family wishes to share an area/room within their home with someone else (in order to assist in the living costs for example), then we advise that the room is given to a practising Muslim. Furthermore, it is necessary that the laws of Parda are completely adhered to i.e. there are separate entrance/exits and no interaction between males and females takes place.
And Allah Ta’ala knows best
