We have received your query regarding impurity, our response is as follows:
There are two types of impurities:
- Najasat Ghaleezah (heavier form of impurity)
- Najasat Khafeefah (lighter form of impurity)
Examples of Najasat Ghaleezah: Blood, stool, urine, semen of humans, intoxicating drinks, the excreta and urine of cats and dogs etc
Examples of Najasat Khafeefah: Excreta of Haram birds and the urine of Halal animals, such as goats, cows and buffaloes etc.
If a Najasat Ghaleezah that is thin and flowing falls on the body or clothes, it will be excused if the area on which it falls is equal to or is less than a Dirham (approximately 2.5 to 3 centimetres in diameter). However, to perform Salaah with such an amount of impurity is Makruh Tahreemi (highly detestable). However if it is more than the size of a Dirham, Salaah will be null and void and will have to be repeated.
If the Najasat Ghaleezah is thick and solid, for example stool, and its weight is more then about 4 grams, then performing Salaah without washing it off will be invalid .
Regarding Najasat Khafeefah, if it is less than a quarter of the area on which it fell, it will be excused. But if it is equal to a quarter or more, it will not be excused.[1]
It may be difficult to determine the exact amount of impurity, therefore, in all of the above cases one is advised to remove and clean the impurity and perform ones Salaah, irrespective of the amount.
And Allah Ta’ala knows best
