Urine drops

(#115)

Salam

I was told to email my question to get a detailed response. Here is my question. I find that after urination in the toilet in seated position, once I have performed istinja and gotten up, i try to squeeze out last drops of urine but I always seem to find that a drop or two of urine always comes out after I have gotten up and land on my undergarment or my pants. Does this make me napaak? Does my prayers not get aceppeted if I performed wudu while being in this state? Or  I being too pedantic?

We have received your query with regards to urine drops after Istinja, our response is as follows:

After relieving oneself, one should make sure that no urine remains which may drip out after a while. There is no need to vigorously squeeze the private part. In any method that a person feels the left over urine will come out he may opt for that method. Sometimes (after putting some tissue on the private part), sometimes by passing one’s hand from the back passage to the front passage, for some it is by taking a few steps or by coughing this may be accomplished. Hence, one must employ some means to remove out the left over drops.

If you are fully convinced and absolutely certain of the emission of urine drops (after Wudu) then this will nullify the Wudhu and a fresh Wudhu will have to be made altogether. There will be no need for Ghusl to be made in this instance.

As far as your underwear is concerned, washing of the soiled portion will suffice and it will not be necessary to change the underwear all the time.

Furthermore, to save ones underwear from becoming soiled one may place toilet paper or anything the like thereof which will save one from the difficulty of washing one’s underwear all the time.

If the drops of urine that emerged were more than a dirham (total area of 5.94cm²), the Salaah will have to be repeated.

However, if they were equal or less than a dirham, the Salaah will be valid yet disliked.

(Shaami v.1 pg.316 / Ahsanul-Fatawa v.2 pg.89)

Therefore, in conclusion we advise that after urinating you should try to adopt whichever method is easy and effective for you. Thereafter, if you still feel that urine drops are coming out than we recommend that some toilet paper be placed in your undergarment. After some time have a look at the toilet paper, if it not soiled than you will know that this is the Waswasa (whisperings) of Shaytaan. In such a case you should sprinkle some water on your undergarments and ignore the whisperings of Shaytan and perform your Salaah. However, if the toilet paper is soiled than in such a case you should remove the toilet paper, perform Wudu and Salaah.

Final note: One should not overburden one’s self in executing the above, whereby ones starts to fall prey to the whisperings of Shaytaan and ones falls into greater anxiety, as this can be detrimental to one’s health.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
