We acknowledge receipt of your query and our reply follows herewith:

Allah Ta’ala has mentioned in the Noble Qur’aan:

“Say that all (conditions) come from Allah” (Surah Nisa 88)

It is the belief of a Muslim that all conditions come from Allah Ta’ala and no one else. Together with this, the knowledge of all conditions and when they will occur in the future is also by Allah Ta’ala.

The Noble Qur’an prohibited the Sahaha radiyallahu anhum from “picking out arrows”, a customary practice in the pre-Islamic era which was used to determine whether one should proceed with a specific task or not. Allama Ibn-ul- Arabi Rahimahullah mentions that the reason for prohibition is that it is a method of trying to find out the future which is Haraam.

احكام القران ج6 ص 544

Also, it is stated in Tafseer-e-Mazhari that any such act used to try to determine the future will be included under the prohibition mentioned in this Aayat.

و ان تستقسموا باالازلام —  قلت و كل شىء يطلب به علم الغيب على نحو هذا الطريق ..فهو داخل فى الاسحكام بالازلام عبارة او دلالة

 تفسير المظهرى ج3 ص23

Furthermore، there are strict warnings in the Ahaadeeth regarding fortune telling.

In one Hadith it is mentioned, whosoever approaches a fortune teller or has intercourse with his wife while she is in the state of menstruation or has anal intercourse with her, has certainly dissociated himself from what has been revealed on Muhammad Sallallâhu alaihi wa sallam.( Abu Dawood, Vol.2 Pg.189)

Rasululllah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said that one who goes to a fortune teller and believes him has exonerated himself from what has been revealed unto Muhammed (sallallahu alai wasallam).

ابو داود ج4 ص182  نسخة العينى

In another Hadith it is mentioned that one who goes to an عراف , his salaah will not be accepted for 40 days i.e. it will be void of blessing and reward.

Allama Nawawi rahimahullah explains that an عراف is a type of a fortune teller. (مسلم ج 14 ص22 )

Therefore, you should avoid and stay far away from such people who claim to have knowledge of the future. Try your best to explain to your family the correct belief of Islaam and to avoid contact with such people who claim that they know of the future. These gurus and fortune tellers take aid from Shaytaan and practice evil rituals. Many a times they also make people read such evil and forbidden statements which are extremely detrimental to ones Imaan.

Even if your family are adament despite exhausting all your efforts, then too it will not be permissible to go such people. Nabi Sallahu alai wa salam has said

“There is no obedience to the creation in the disobedience of the creator (Musannaf Ibnu Abi Shaybah)”.

Allah Ta’ala grant us all the ability to stay firm on the correct belief and safeguard us from all evil-Aameen.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
